According to the book New Homes In a New Land German Immigration to Texas 1847-1861 by Ethel Hander Geue, 1970 on pages 39 and 98, Carl Kutzer and family and R. Kutzer arrived on Sept. 30, 1854 at Galveston after sailing on Schilda Gessner from Bremen.
The Bexar Co. Census, page 459, P. O. San Antonio, taken on July 24, 1860 gave: Charles Kutzer 44, Caroline 47, Rhinholt 21, Rhinhart 12, and Clara 10. Charles and Reinholt were listed as farmers. The whole family was from Germany. Charles' Real Estate value was $960 and Personal Property value was $520. [I do not have the whole page copied, but it appears that Haberman is listed before him and Theodore Stahl is listed after him.........The Productions of Agriculture census of Bexar County P. O. Selma, taken on July 20, 1860 lists Charles Kutzer having 20 acres of improved land and 140 acres of unimproved land. The cash value of the farm was $960 and the value of machinery $75, value of livestock was $456, etc.... The order of the owner, agent, or manager of the farm were as follows: John Tabelmates(?), Henry Voges, August Pippes, __Obets(?), Theodore Jarvis, J. O. Meusebach, H. Haberman, Charles Kutzer, J. M. Secrest, R. B. Evans, W. Davenport, Richard Hines, Thomas Stevens, J. D. Hevecomb, Martin Schmit, Morris Ferris, Smith & Hall, J. T. Cunningham, Ed___ Stopper, J. W. Fraizies (?), R. W. Brahw(?). As you can tell, I am not real familiar with some of these names.] NOTE: I did not really pay attention to the detail that Carl Kutzer was listed as having P. O. "San Antonio" on one census and "Selma" on the other.
Kendall County Marriage License #13 was issued Sept. 11, 1863 for Reinhold Kutzer and Pauline Holzinger.
According to A Hundred Years of Comfort in Texas A Centennial History by Guido E. Ransleben, 1954, 1974 pages 25, 30, 52-53: Carl Kutzer came to Comfort in 1865. He bought parts of a sawmill from Mr. Altgelt, built a flour mill about 2 miles above Comfort on the Guadalupe River.

Feb. 14, 1870 Charles Kutzer purchased "a tract of land lying in Kerr County known on the County map of Bexar County, as Survey No. 29, in the name of O. P. Moore."

August 28, 1872 Carl Kutzer age 56 of Germany declared his intention to naturalize, but the citizenship was not recorded as being granted. District Court 23rd Civil minuets Book H, page 166 had the proceedings recorded. The original papers are filed in Box C, document number 347, in the district vault. Index to Naturalization Records, Bexar County, Texas, page 142 was my source.
Feb. 7, 1878 Carl Kutzer married his second wife Emilie Apelt Pieschel in Kerr County. Found on microfilm which listed the source as Book B, page 5.
Kendall County Census, page 210, Precinct #1, SD 6, ED 88 taken on June 8, 1880 lists Reinhold Kutzer, Pauline, Ida, Emma, Anna, Clara, Alber, Otto, Amelia, Ernst, Maria Holzinger (mother-in-law).

March 11, 1887 Carl Kutzer died in a runaway accident on his farm. He is buried in the Comfort Cemetery.
This is the pertinent information that I have on Carl Kutzer and his immediate family in Texas between the time of his arrival to his death. As you see, in the 1860 census it lists a wife named Caroline. No place else does there appear a listing for a wife named Caroline. Unless there is an unmarked grave (which I have not explored) next to Carl Kutzer in the Comfort Cemetery I have no idea where Caroline may be buried. Since the only record I have of her is in Selma, I thought she might possibly be buried there. Family legend indicates her maiden name is Pfeiffer, but I have no proof of that fact. The Pfeiffer families that I have visited with have no record of her in their family tree. There is a reference of an early ancestor coming to America with "Uncle Kutzer". This is the only written indication of a Pfeiffer-Kutzer relationship that I have found. [Submitted by Margaret Kutzer Morries]
