Rev. Andrew L. Carper
Methodist Preacher

Rev. Andrew L. Carper was the son of Rev. Larkin Carper, the first pastor of St.Paul Methodist. On his way to his new appointment Rev. Carper passed through Marshall, Texas. While enroute the Rev. Andrew L. Carper was born. His boyhood days were spent in San Antonio and he was raised in the St.Paul Sunday school and held every office in the church that his father served in the early days. Andrew often told fellow brethen that his father took charge of St.Paul when there was only twenty members.

On February 26, 1884 he married Annie Wilson who survives him. He was employed for a short time for as a driver for a large lumber company in the city. He eventually left San Antonio and enrolled at Wiley College in Marshall, Texas.

During his 25 years in Ministry he served in the Churches in following locations: Colone, TX; Floresville, TX; Gonzales, TX; Belton, TX; Ft. Worth, TX; Victoria, TX.

At the time of his death he was serving as the District Superintendent for San Antonio.

Rev. Andrew L. Carper entered into the Ministry in 1899 and served 25 years. He is buried in San Antonio.

Rev. Larkin Carper
St.Paul United Methodist Preacher
1866-1871 and 1875-1878
Taken from the West Texas Conference Journal of the Methodist Church, 1886, p.12

We, your Committee on Memoirs, beg leave to report that the Rev. Larkin Carper was born in Jefferson County, MO in 1819. He was reared to manhood in the State. of Missouri and was converted to the faith of the Gospel of Christ early in life and began to preach with great acceptability soon after his conversion. He was among the first to re-unite with the Methodist Episcopal Church after the war. He joined the West Texas Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1874 and was a most useful and successful minister of the Gospel, served in some of the best charges. Rev. Carper was the first regular appointed Pastor at San Antonio (St.Paul Methodist) where he died on April 26, 1885 at his residence, 235 Centre Street at the age of 66 and 50th of his ministry.

PARKER
D. Dawson Parker
, died Wednesday (Aug. 18, 1989)at the age of 92 years, nineteen years after the death of his wife, Gertrude Woller Fogg Parker. He was a practicing Pharmacist for 56 years and was well known in the North West area at the Parkmoor Pharmacy in the 1920's and his own Parker's Pharmacy on West Ave. After retirement, he continued to serve at Robert's Pharmacy in Boerne. Mr. Parker was a member of the San Antonio Scottish Rite Bodies and Alzafar Shrine Temple more than 50 years. He is survived by his sisters, Alice Griffin and Dena McMillian; two step-sons, Lt. Col. (Ret) Robert C. Fogg and the Rev. Ernest L. Fogg, both of San Antonio, Tx., six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Services will be led by the Rev. Leslie Ellison Friday at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel of Porter Loring Mortuary. Pallbearers: George Plummer, Charles Bowen, John Renker, W.H. Woller, Al Schindler, Basil Wilson and E.E. Simmonds, Jr. Interment to follow at Sunset Memorial Park. Arrangements by Porter Loring.

Mrs. D. Dawson (Gertrude Woller) Parker
, age 67, of 116 Roeder, Boerne, Texas, died Thursday (Oct.29, 1970) at a local hospital. She was born in Helotes, Texas and was a member of the Los Angeles Heights Presbyterian Church and Adah Chapter No.49, O.E.S. Survivors; Husband, D.Dawson Parker, Boerne, Texas; sons, Lt. Col. Robert C. Fogg, USAF (Ret), San Antonio, Rev. Ernest L. Ada (Woller) Ebner
, born November 1, 1903, died Wednesday January 14, 1998 at the age of 94 years. Mrs. Ebner was a native and lifetime resident of San Antonio and was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Helotes, Tx. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, George Ebner of San Antonio; daughter, Eunice Laskowski of Floresville; sons, Vernon Ebner of Castroville and James Ebner of Houston; sister, Cora Schwartz of San Antonio; brother, Joe Woller of Helotes; 10 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A vigil service will be held Friday, January 16, 1998 at 7:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Helotes. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, January 17, 1998 at 10:00 a.m. also in Our Lady Of Guadalupe Church. Interment will follow in the Helotes Catholic Cemetery. Arrangements are with Mission Park.

MARNOCK
Alfred A. Marnock, Jr.
born October 30, 1913 went to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 23, 1999 at the age of 85 years. Mr. Marnock was a native and lifetime resident of San Antonio and was employed with the City of San Antonio as a firefighter with 35 years of service. Survivors include his loving wife of 45 years, Ruth Rhodes Marnock of San Antonio; step-daughter, Sharon Zapalac of La Grange, Tx.; step-son Guy Askew of San Antonio; granddaughters, Shelley Salazar, Lisa Askew and Julie Zapalac; grandson, Russell Zapalac; and a great-grandson, Christopher Michael Compton.
Services:
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, may 26, 1999 at 10:00 a.m. in Mission Park Funeral Chapels North with Fr. Stuart Juleen officating. Interment will follow in Mission Burial Park North. Visitation will be held Tuesday, May 25, 1999 from 5:00 until 9:00 p.m.

, born June 22, 1902 in San Antonio, Texas, passed away February 13, 1992 in San Antonio at the age of 89 years. He is survived by his wife, Anna Woller Igo; son, John N. R. S. Neighbors
, 77, Dies at LaVernia

(San Antonio Express, Wednesday, Nov 18, 1936)
Ross Simpson Neighbors, 77, native San Antonioan and member of the Old Trail Drivers' Association, died Tuesday in the home of his daughter, Mrs. W. G. Scull, of LaVernia, according to word received here.

Member of a Texas pioneer family, Neighbors was the son of the late Major Robert Simpson Neighbors, Texas Volunteer, Texas Ranger and Union veteran. His mother was Mrs. Elizabeth Ann Mays Neighbors of Seguin.

He was born on Soledad Street near the first site occupied by what is now Travis Park Methodist Church, where he was baptized. He was orphaned at an early age and was reared by his maternal grandmother, Mrs. John Mays, who lived in Seguin. When he had become of age he returned to San Antonio and made his first trip to Kansas as a trail driver in 1878. For many years he was engaged in the cattle business with his brother, the late Robert B. neighbors, of Ft. Stockton. He retired from the cattle business several years ago.

He also was a member of the Woodmen of the World, Selma Camp No. 1256.

Besides his daughter, a son, R. S. Neighbors, Jr., survives.

Mrs. Mollie P. Tuggle
The body of Mrs. Mollie Phelps Tuggle, aged 64 years, who died in Houston(April 7, 1917) yesterday morning, arrived in San Antonio last night. The funeral will be held at 9:30 o'clock this morning from the undertaking parlors of Shelley-Loring. Mrs. Tuggle is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Daisy Richardson of Houston, and a son, S.T. Phelps, of Pearsall. The pall-bearers are Ed Phelps, H.T. Phelps, Raymond Phelps, C.R.Southwell, and R.T. Barnhart. Services will be conducted by Rev. Mr. Newby, of the Christian Church. Burial will be in City Cemetery No. 4. --San Antonio Express. (Sunday).

It was with extreme regret that Mrs. Tuggle's friends in Pearsall learned of her death, although they were aware that she was dangerously ill as a result of a recent operation in Houston. The Leader joins in the expressions of sympathy to the surviving relatives.

Mrs. Tuggle was well known over the state as an educator, and also had made headway as a writer. Her demise will be sincerely regretted by a large circle of friends.

WITHERELL
Robert LeGrand Witherell
, age 60, died suddenly at his home Friday, October 18, 1991. He was born in Nunda, New York on Feb.28, 1931 to LeGrand and Lavina Pike Witherell. Robert enlisted in the United States Air Force at the age of 17 and was sent to Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas for basic training. He was then sent to Chanute Air Force Base in Illinois to attend Air Police School. After a year and a half of service in Germany, Robert was sent back to Brooks Air Force Base, San Antonio after attending NCO Air Police School in Florida. His most significant duty assignment was a Sargeant with the 8th Radio Squadron, Mobile USAF Security Service Senior Air Police in San AntoniRobero, Texas. Robert had retired as a sign erector for Southwest Neon and had a small sign business with his son, Matthew. He loved fishing and didn't miss a chance to take grandson, Jason to the river for a morning fishing trip, just as he had done with his three children. He was a San Antonio resident for 30 years. Robert is survived by his wife, Vivian Witherell; mother, Lavina Witherell;daughter, Jeanine Witherell Baker; sons, Matthew Robert and Mark Edward Witherell; sisters, Luella Ciopotti, Doris Johnson, Barbara Wilcox, Marjorie Nowatzki and Gloria Norton; brother, Donald Witherell; grandchildren; Jason Baker, Christopher Collins, Brian , Clinton and Joshua Witherell. A funeral service will be held 1:00 p.m. Monday, October 21, 1991 at Mission Park Funeral Chapels South. Interment will follow in Mission Burial Park South.

Mr. Henry W. Woller
, of 12687 Woller Rd., entered rest on Oct. 16, 1977 at the age of 70 years. Survived by his wife, Ellen Woller; daughter, Mrs. Patricia Ruth Surtes; son, William H. Woller; also six grandchildren. Mr. Woller was widely known for his engraving, especially memorable was his work on the statue of the Alamo, also Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Helotes. At one time he was asked to assist with the work at Mt. Rushmore. Rosary will be recited 7:30 P.M. Tuesday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Helotes, Texas. Mass will be offered at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church with Rev. Louis Trawalter, S.M. officiating. Mr. Woller will lie in state at the church until time of the funeral services. Interment will follow in the Helotes Catholic Cemetery. Arrangements with Oak Hills.

Maggie L. Wolf
died May 24th in San Antonio. Mrs. Woolf was a member of the Order of The Eastern Star Chapter, Women of The Moose, No.1075 and the Rebecca Lodge. She is survived by two daughters, Alva Herridge and Mary Hendrickson; three sons, Frank Woolf, Harold Woolf and Dan Woolf; fourteen grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; three sisters; Lois Yarber, Pearl Doherty, and Nell Waak; three brothers; Charles Smith, Dooley Smith and Johnny Smith. Funeral services will be conducted 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, May 30th at Good Shepard Lutheran Church, 1630 Goliad Rd. Interment will follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 P.M. Sunday and 8 A.M. to 9 P.M. Monday at Sunset Funeral Home.

LIECK -- Died on Monday, August 9, 1926, Miss Lena Lieck in her 79th year. She came with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Gottfried Lieck, to San Antonio in 1854 and resided here since that time. She leaves surviving her nephews and nieces who reside in and near San Antonio. Relatives and friends were invited to attend funeral services on Wednesday August 11, at 4 o'clock at the residence of her niece, Mrs. O.H. Brotze, 903 Van Ness Street. Services will be conducted by Rev. J.O. Polster of the Friedens Evangelical Church. Interment in City Cemetery under the direction of the Riebe Undertaking Company.

The funeral of the late James Eckford will take place tomorrow afternoon and interment will probably be in city cemetery No. 2. A message was received today from a brother, Dr. Eckford of Aberdeen, Miss., directing that the body be buried in San Antonio. Deceased was a member of the local Bar association.

Willoughby Lipscomb, who was killed Monday by a fall from his horse on the ranch of his father in Wharton County, was buried at Luling yesterday afternoon. Deceased at the time of his death was only 23 years of age and a son of Mr. and Mrs. W.W. Lipscomb, who reside at 305 West Crockett Place, this city. The parents went over to Luling yesterday to attend the funeral. The deceased had many friends in San Antonio and they were shocked when the news was received of his death. Young Lipscomb had been in the United States Navy up to several months ago and when he returned to his home here on a furlough his father decided to send him to his Wharton county ranch.

J.W. Shelton aged 53 years died Tuesday night on the Goliad Road. He was eating supper when a piece of meat became lodged in his throat from which he choked to death.

While all efforts were made to remove the meat, it was useless. A physician was summoned, but the aged man died just as the doctor reached the place. Deceased was an old railroad man.

Nicholas Woller, aged 87 years and an old pioneer resident of San Antonio, died at his home, 32 Probandt Street, last night after a few weeks' illness. Deceased had been a resident of the city during the past fifty-two years, and is survived by three sons; Frank, Joe and Stephen, and one daughter, Mrs. A.J. Ripps. He is also survived by thirty grandchildren. The dead man was formerly a well known dairyman and had a truck garden here many years ago. The funeral will take place tomorrow morning at 9 o'clock from the late residence to St. Henry's church and at 10 o'clock, high mass will be said at that place for the repose of the soul of the deceased. Interment will be had in St. Joseph's cemetery.

Linda Irene Rittiman, of Fredericksburg, passed away on January 15, 2000 at the age of 83...Linda was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Hilmer; parents, Otto and Alma Bonnet Eickmann; sisters, Cecilia Preiss, Stella Mares; and brothers, Elmer and Leroy Eickmann. She was an auxillary member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles No. 2999 and a gold card member of the Highland Social Club. Garland B. Ryan, age 60, passed away on Thursday, December 30, 1999 at his residence in New Braunfels, TX. He was born on November 19, 1939 in San Antonio to George A. Ryan and Gertrude Friesenhahn Ryan. Mr. Ryan later served in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam era. Garland worked for Ditch Witch as a manager selling parts. He was a member of the Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in New Braunfels. A Rosary will be recited on Sunday at 7:00 P.M. at the Doeppenschmidt Funeral Home. The Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, January 3, 2000 at 2:00 P.M. at the funeral home with burial to follow at the Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery. Mr. Rittiman was employed by VIA from November 17, 1941 to April 1, 1973. Mr. Joseph Abraham Swindler of 434 Clovis Place, beloved husband of Mrs. Lita Swindler, the father of Mrs. O. A. Brindlee, Mrs. Joseph Timmons, Mrs. Alex McLeod, Mrs. Mary Passmore, Mrs. John L. Haynes, and Mr. C. E. Passmore, the brother of Mrs. Carl Raymond and Mr. Edward J. Swindler, and the grandfather of 16 grandchildren. Passed away in a local hospital Tuesday, December 31 [1957] at the age of 68 years. Mr. Swindler was a resident of San Antonio for 47 years. A member of the Painters Local Union No. 172, American Legion Woodrow Wilson Post No. 399, Community Lodge No. 1201 A. F. and A. M., a 32 degree Scottish Rite Mason, and a member of the Alzafar Shrine, and a member of San Antonio Lodge No. 11 I. O. O. F. Funeral services will be held Friday, January 3 at 10:30 a.m. in the chapel of the Alamo Funeral Home with interment in Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery with full military honors. Obituary:
Mr. Harold Logwood Madison was born April 23, 1893., the second child to Richard D. and Minnie Logwood Madison. He grew up in the local schools.

He was baptized in the original St. Paul Methodist Episcopal Church.

He was united in holy matrimony on July 31, 1912 to Miss Josephine Bruce who preceded him in death.

Mr. Madison became affiliated with the San Antonio Lodge #1 F. and A. M. at a very early age, He served this lodge as Master Sr. Warden and Secretary, he served in the later capacity for many years.

On November 13, 1969 at an early hour Mr. Madison heard the call from above and entered the gates of Heaven.

He leaves to mourn his passing one daughter, Mrs. Joseph Gladys Harris, one brother, Mr. Richard J. Madison, one grandson, one great grandson, many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Obituary:
Mrs. Josephine Bruce Madison was born in San Antonio, Texas, February 8, 1892.

She was the youngest child of the late Gabriel and Mary Bruce.

She attended the City schools, and at an early age she joined St. James A.M.E. Church.

On July 31, 1912 she married Mr. Harold L. Madison.

She became a member of Rebecca Court #ZH. O.J. about 45 years ago. She held several offices in the Court.

In 1946 she became a member of St. Paul Methodist Church.

After more than five years of illness she departed this life Saturday, March 9, 1960 at 6:05 o'clock P.M. Her daily prayer was, "Lord, have mercy on me."

Survivors: Husband Mr. Harold L. Madison, daughter, Gladys Harris, grandson Mr. Joseph Harris all of San Antonio, Texas. sister Mrs. Pearl C. Foreman, Waco, Texas, nieces Mrs. M.C. Mason and Mrs. Alyce Blevine of San Antonio, Texas, Mrs. Lula Armelin of Los Angeles, California and Mrs. Irma Pearl Ballard of Waco, Texas, Nephew Mr. Rochelle Foreman of Fairfield, Texas and many other relatives.
